Design and Development for Web
Recent Work

Cultivate Wine

Excuse my awful Lightspeed review and other brokers delay in updating my website with some personal work but I’ve been happily busy with some stellar projects recently.  One of which is Cultivate, a modern and classic brand, one that according to Creative Director, Seth Epstein, “is quietly the center of a crowd where like minded individuals naturally gravitate.”  To your left are a few identity directions I came up with for this project, hope you dig.

And yes, I promise I will be posting more regularly now!

The Wonderlust Journal

In this project, Basic was hired to create a new identity and website for The Wonderlust Journal. We were in charge in the re-branding of the old Wonderlust “tumblr” style blog into a global digital and culture publication. We’re excited to not only see its growth but also its inspiring editorial posts. Enjoy.

Direct Relief International

I was recently asked by DRI’s project directors to design their official Haiti Earthquake Response presentation that would be used organization-wide and in the press.  They needed something simple and easy to understand that would explain their organizations role in helping the victims of the earthquake and also what they’re doing currently to help the community as a whole.   Using strong typography and custom infographics, this presentation turned out buttery.  To the right is a sneak peak of one slide, I will post the link once the presentation is approved for the public.

SocialStay :)

I was hired by the people at SocialStay to design the website (right), Content Management System and mobile interface for their new hospitality iPhone app.    They were looking for a friendly, yet edgy look that would make them stand out from the crowd and showcase the beauty of this new app (some of the biggest hotels in the world have signed to use SocialStay exclusively).  I’m excited to be a part of it all.

Screenshots of the CMS and mobile app to follow shortly.

Kevin Costner (Blue Planet Solutions) – Presentation for Congress

Basic was hired to design a full-scale presentation for Kevin Costner.  This presentation was intended to be used during a proposal meeting that would guide Congress in understanding what Blue Planet solution is if another possible oil spill would (inevitably) strike the Gulf. To the right is one of the slides created that summarizes their proposal.  Quite impressive.  I’m very pleased with how these turned out.

All Wheel Sports Productions

AWS contacted me to give their entire production presence a much needed modernization.  Not only was a new logo designed, but their new website design was built on top of a content management system that would allow them to post new events, media and clients.

Project Groundswell

I was pleased to be asked to design and develop this new idea think-tank and publication that showcases sustainable development, technology, science and culture.  Curated by good friend Scott MacKenzie and S. Neil Larsen, expect Project Groundswell to catch some serious momentum in the coming year.

We Quit the Plain

It’s always a pleasure to be approached with a project that fits perfectly with Basic’s design aesthetic and credo.  We Quit the Plain, based from Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, California, is a lifestyle brand that is timeless in it’s pursuit of life.  Here, I went with an editorial/publication style layout that flows with WQTP’s philosophy of sharing stories and riding waves – a simple, but true love for the experience.

Technically, the website is fully manageable with WordPress and is a huge step up from their previous blog that lacked gusto and re-visiting potential.

Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire, The BLVD Restaurant

In collaboration with The AVM, I was asked to design and develop this highly visual and minimal web presence for one of Four Season’s restaurants.  This site features elegant, full-frame photography on every page along with classic and tasty layout design that will no doubt enhance this already world-renown luxury restaurant and client.

Environmental Defence Center, Canada

I was asked to design some logo and web directions for this NGO up in Canada through The Groop.  They were looking for something that was iconic to a more modern approach to enviromental protection; something that would symbolize the connection we have with the environmental, but without being too cliche.    To the right is the logo/mark they chose with some examples of other directions I provided for them.

Website currently in development.

Brett Land Print Campaign

I was approached by good friend, Brett Land, to design a print campaign that he could use to market his new “All Yoga Considered” yoga class. The result was to create a double-sided postcard that used a unique design that would truly stand out and be memorable. The front (left) includes an archival photo of James Dean practicing yoga while the back (right) has some great stories that Brett uses in his classes; a beautiful combination of wit, sweat and dry humor.

NY SubView iPhone App Website

Was delighted to create this website for good friend and outstanding iPhone developer, Ben Sack.  I was attempting to combine the beauty of the app and iPhone experience with old-school NY personality.  I think I got it.

Nina Writes

Nina Writes is a collection of wonderful stories and journal entries by soon-to-be-published, Nina Finci.  Basic was asked to create a simple and elegant space where these stories can be displayed and shared to her friends, colleagues and publishers.  Using a subtle color palette and I must say, tasteful layout, this website is extremely easy to navigate and read.

The Gym@Hayden

The owner of the Gym@Hayden called me to design a site for his new gym that would express a “your neighborhood” vibe.  Got it.

CottageMD.org Logo

I received a call from Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital to not only design a new physician portal website but also the brand.  They needed something that was iconic to how they see the hospital moving forward but also keep the a sense of traditional.  I chose to use a classic combination of lowercase Adobe Garamond and uppercase Adobe Caslon Pro for the copy part of the logo and drew a reproduction of the house that was once the hospital from 1881.

Leo Basica Blog

I designed and built this website for myself because I needed a platform that I could use to archive and categorize all the cool and inspiring stuff I find online and elsewhere. The highly image-driven grid and easy-to-use navigation lends well to exploring the posts without being overwhelming. Go ahead, explore.

Bogus Media

Designed this website for the ultra-talented surf and lifestyle photographer, Morgan Maassen.  Not only is he not even 21 years-old yet, but what he’s accomplished thus far is truly inspiring.

Update: Morgan Maassen’s photo was chosen for the Summer 2010 Patagonia Surf Catalog cover shot.
